Which classes do you teach online?

Legal Environment of Business

Why did you start teaching?

In graduate school, First students suffered under me in 1970 when I knew nothing. Until you teach, you don't realize how little you know.

I have taught Legal Environment of Business since 1978, first at Texas A&M, later at Clemson, and now at UTA.

What advice would you give to those considering the UTA MBA online program?

Look for a practical, substantive program in which you will learn material that will be beneficial to your career. The degree for the sake of a degree is not of much use, focus on what is covered.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

My textbook!

What qualities make someone particularly successful in business?

Being able to cooperate with others effectively. We always interact with other employees and clients. Being comfortable doing so is critical. We also hear from employers that ability to communicate ideas clearly is important.

What do you want your students to learn in your classes?

Appreciation for the wonderful legal system that encourages people to do what they want to do in business, while being held responsible for decisions made. We will focus on the most important and practical aspects of law as it relates to business.

How do you see online learning affecting the future of education?

It will dominate more and more because our population is aging--older people have family needs that make going to campus costly--and because the sophistication of online courses is growing rapidly. Ten years ago they were just go read the book. Now the learning materials make effective use of the online format.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that you students may not know.

My four kids are all doing well despite their father. One is a nurse in a psychiatric ward at a VA hospital--she can handle anything. Another is a professional downhill skateboard racer who has traveled around the world. The other two are involved in satellites--one builds photographic satellites and one monitors communication space on a satellite. The world is a lot different than when I was their age!
