For University of Texas at Arlington graduate Liz Phillips, determination has always been key to success. It has helped her throughout her 10-year career as an emergency room nurse in the Dallas area, and it also aided her as she earned her Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner degree while pregnant with her third child. It even helped during her board exam when she went into labor. Despite the overwhelming challenge, she successfully finished the test before being rushed to the hospital. This type of determination is one of the qualities UTA instills in its graduates.
The MSN – Family Nurse Practitioner program at UTA is built for flexibility, making it easy to fit studying into a busy schedule. “I appreciated being able to work full-time, be an engaged mom to my daughters, and pursue my degree at the same time with the online MSN – Family Nurse Practitioner program,” Liz said. “The convenience of being able to study from home while I rocked my children to sleep meant the world to me.” This type of convenience, while a lifeline to busy parents who return to school, doesn’t have to be a tradeoff.
By developing research, diagnostic and clinical skills, the UTA MSN – Family Nurse Practitioner program prepares students to assume responsibility as family nurse practitioners and to provide healthcare to patients and families in a variety of settings. The curriculum helped Liz build the confidence she needed to work with her patients. “I applied what I was learning about family practice in the program to the acute care setting that I worked in, providing better care and increasing my ability to help patients with prevention information during discharge,” she said. “It was deeply fulfilling for me.”
One of the main contributing factors to Liz’s success as a student was the faculty. “I received exactly what I needed from them,” she said. The MSN – Family Nurse Practitioner faculty is made up of experienced professionals who pride themselves in giving students the support and attention they need to learn the material and develop practical skills. “I was happy with how easy it was to access them through email or text message whenever I needed clarification or support.”
Liz attributes her career success to her time at UTA. “I felt that the program advanced my career in multiple ways, and the coursework forever changed me through information that elevated my practice and perspective on patient care,” she said. “I’m excited to integrate the traditional Western medicine that I learned through UTA with a lot of the holistic and functional information they shared, increasing my ability to provide a whole health perspective to my patients.”
With what the program offered, Liz feels confident in her future as a nurse. “I feel I can have a greater impact on the community with an FNP, and I’m looking forward to impacting my community in a profound way.” With the strength and determination Liz has shown as both a student and a mother, there’s no doubt she will continue to achieve great things.
