What do you want students to take away from your classes?
I want students to learn the power and value of servant leadership; that change starts from within, grows locally and builds nationally and internationally; the value of good communication skills; the ability to educate others and create awareness is a key to enabling change; and that there’s room for everyone at the table.
What is the value of the BSPH degree?
The value of a BSPH degree is what you make of it. Some students will sit back and say "Hey, I have a degree," and others will use these experiences to take life by the horns and say "Hey, let's do great things!"
What advice would you give to those considering a UTA online BSPH program?
The opportunities presented by taking a UTA online BSPH class can be life-changing!
Why did you start teaching?
I started teaching because one person cannot win a war, but a well-trained army can. Building tomorrows leaders is a legacy that will last forever.
Why are you interested in public health? What drew you to this field?
I have always been interested in inequality: How does it start, and what can be done to address it? The field of public health is directed at helping those who may not know they need help and those who may know this but aren’t sure how or where to get it. To be a land of opportunity, we have to make sure that everyone has those opportunities.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that public health professionals face today?
The biggest challenge faced by public health professionals is being prepared to advocate for everything – funding, attention, media, "a place at the table"… you will have to be prepared to fight to be successful.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
The Innovators by Walter Isaacson
