Career Highlights:
In which online degree program do you teach?
Which classes do you teach online?
HEED 3305, HEED 4320 and KINE 3302
What do you want students to take away from your classes?
HEED 3305: The understanding that they have an enormous amount of control over their health. Lifestyle behavior overrides genetic predispositions.
HEED 4320: To live a long and healthy life starts now, not later. Activity and diet are key.
KINE 3302: The difference between elite and average athletes is their mindset. Everybody loses. It's what you do with that information that counts.
What is the value of the BSPH degree?
The information learned from earning a BSPH can translate into many different careers, here and in other parts of the world.
What advice would you give to those considering a UTA online BSPH program?
It is a lot of work but well worth the effort.
Why did you start teaching?
I started to teach swimming courses over 30 years ago, and that transcended into the lecture courses. There is nothing more exciting and rewarding than to see a student when "they get it."
Why are you interested in public health? What drew you to this field?
I think my involvement in public health is a natural progression from the current classes I teach. We do a really poor job in the U.S. at preventative medicine but an excellent job in emergency procedures and medicine. I believe that strong public health programs and interventions can help eliminate and/or delay many illnesses and diseases. Prevention is key.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that public health professionals face today?
Good programs that easily communicate health interventions.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
How Not to Die by Dr. Michael Greger
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know.
