What is the value of the BSPH degree?
The BSPH program features a competency-based curriculum. This curriculum, built upon a matrix that includes The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation criteria, Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) undergraduate competencies and The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice Tier I Public Health Workforce competencies includes relevant coursework, accompanied by experiential and service learning activities anchored throughout the program. These program elements will enable students to gain a broad knowledge base, along with the skills and abilities necessary to be a competent and effective member of the public health workforce. The BSPH will provide a unique trajectory of continued academic growth and excellence through provision of an intersection point at which individual health and wellness meets population health and prevention of disease.
What advice would you give to those considering a UTA online BSPH program?
If you have the self-discipline to engage in online learning, and you want to work in a public health capacity, this program is for you! Along with your coursework, advocate for your own personal growth and professional development by accessing volunteer opportunities and working in public health-related organizations.
Why did you start teaching?
I have always been passionate about teaching, coaching and motivating students. I know my efforts have been successful when my students graduate and go on to gain meaningful employment in positions where they are able to make real and important contributions to their communities.
Why are you interested in public health? What drew you to this field?
My son, Tyler, was born with spina bifida, and I began to learn about a particularly vulnerable population: individuals with physical disabilities. I wanted to be able to make a difference in the best way possible, so I utilized my leadership skills and educational background to develop the BSPH program. I anticipate my students will impact health across the state, nation and beyond, touching lives in a positive way as the next generation of public health professionals.
What do you think is the biggest challenge that public health professionals face today?
Public health professionals are required to work in situations that are often challenging and underfunded. This requires us to be creative critical-thinkers and put our problem solving skills to work! One of the biggest challenges is to contribute to the ongoing societal effort to educate the public about public health, what it is and why it is important. Improved public awareness will provide better support as we endeavor to implement systems-thinking approaches to solving public health issues.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
