Clinical Assistant Professor

UTA faculty - susan norman

"I worked for a local pediatrician and spent time shadowing two pediatric oncologists while I was in college. I began to admire the nurses that were spending time with their patients and I wanted to be a part of that level of patient care."

Degrees Held:

  • M.S. in Nursing Education – Texas Woman's University, 2010
  • BSN – University of Texas at Arlington, 2004

Career Highlights:

After 10 years in retail management, I made the decision to return to school to achieve my degree in nursing. I have never regretted that decision. This is such a dynamic career with so many opportunities for growth and advancement. I received my BSN from UTA, and, after a few years, I returned to school to obtain my MS in Nursing Education. I have worked in critical care my entire career, both in ICU and ED.

I have experience in management coordinating the Rapid Assessment Team as well as serving as charge nurse and team lead for the code blue team. When I began my career, I never expected to end up in a supervisory role, nor did I really see myself as a leader. Great managers challenge their staff to rise to their potential, and I have been very fortunate to work for some incredible managers. I currently teach in both the on-campus and online BSN programs, as well as in the RN-BSN program. I have been with UTA since 2010.

  • Why are you interested in nursing? What drew you to this field?

I have been interested in the medical field since I was a child. Growing up, I wanted to be a pediatric oncologist. I began to admire the nurses that were spending time with their patients and wanted to be a part of that level of patient care. I took a detour working in retail management, but returned to nursing.
